Monroe County (Tennessee)
Monroe County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Madisonville.
Geography
The County is located in the east con Tennessee, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 1690 square kilometers, of which 46 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Loudon County, Blount County, Graham County ( North Carolina), Cherokee County ( North Carolina), Polk County and McMinn County.

History
Monroe County was formed on 13 November 1819 Cherokee Land. It was named after James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Monroe County 38 961 people in 15,329 households and 11,236 families. The population density was 24 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 94.87 percent White, 2.27 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.86 percent from other races groups; 1.26 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 15,329 households out of which 32.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent of all households and 9.4 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average household size was 2.94 people.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 to 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were older than 65, the average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,337, and the median income for a family was $ 34,902. Males have a median income of $ 29,621, women $ 21,064. The per capita income was $ 14,951. 15.5 percent of the population and 12.0 percent of families are below the poverty line.
