McMinn County, Tennessee

McMinn County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Athens.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme southeast of Tennessee, is in the east about 40 miles from North Carolina, located in the south about 45 km from Georgia and has an area of ​​1119 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Roane County, Loudon County, Monroe County, Polk County, Bradley County and Meigs County.

History

McMinn County was formed on 13 November 1819 Cherokee Land. It was named after Joseph McMinn, a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Constitunional Convention ) of Tennessee and later governor.

During the so-called Battle of Athens war returnees demanded an end to the long-standing corruption and electoral fraud in McMinn County, which culminated during the elections on August 1, 1946 in a skirmish between the sheriff and former soldiers.
