Rutherford County (Tennessee)

Rutherford County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Murfreesboro.

Geography

The County is located in the geographic center of Tennessee and has an area of 1616 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Wilson County, Cannon County, Coffee County, Bedford County, Marshall County, Williamson County and Davidson County. The Stones River National Battlefield is located in Rutherford County.

History

Rutherford County was formed on October 25, 1803 from parts of Davidson County. It was named after Griffin Rutherford, an early politician of the Southwest Territory.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Rutherford County 182 023 people in 66 443 households, and 47,440 families. The population density was 114 people per square kilometer.
