Johnson County (Tennessee)

Johnson County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mountain City.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northeastern Tennessee, on the east by North Carolina, to the north by Virginia and has an area of 784 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County ( Virginia), Grayson County ( Virginia), Ashe County ( North Carolina), Watauga County ( North Carolina), Avery County ( North Carolina), Carter County and Sullivan County.

History

Johnson County was formed on January 2, 1836 from parts of Carter County. It was named for Thomas Johnson, an early settler in the area.
