Avery County, North Carolina

Avery County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Newland, named after Lt. Governor William C. Newland.

Geography

The County is located in western North Carolina, adjacent to Tennessee, is located in the north about 80 miles from Virginia and has an area of 640 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Watauga County, Caldwell County, Burke County, McDowell County and Mitchell County.

History

Avery County was formed in 1911 from parts of Caldwell County, Mitchell County and Watauga County. It was named after Waightstill Avery, a Colonel in the American War of Independence and the first Attorney General of North Carolina.
