Hertford County, North Carolina

Hertford County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Winton, named after Benjamin Wynn, who donated the land for the city.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern North Carolina is bordered to the north by Virginia, is located in the east about 120 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 933 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Gates County, Chowan County, Bertie County and Northampton County.

Hertford County is divided into six townships: Ahoskie, Harrellsville, Maney's Neck, Murfreesboro, St. Johns and Winton.

History

Hertford County was formed in 1759 from parts of Bertie County, Chowan County and Northampton County. It was named after Francis Seymour Conway, Earl of Hertford.
