Wilson County (North Carolina)

Wilson County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wilson.

Geography

The County is located in east-central North Carolina and has an area of 969 square kilometers, of which 8 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Nash County, Edgecombe County, Pitt County, Greene County, Wayne County and Johnston County.

Wilson County is divided into ten townships: Black Creek, Crossroads, Gardners, Old Fields, Saratoga, Spring Hill, Stantonsburg, Taylors, Toisnot and Wilson.

History

Wilson County was formed in 1855 from parts of Edgecombe County, Johnston County, Nash County and Wayne County. It was named, as is the district capital of Wilson, by Louis D. Wilson, a politician and officer who was killed in the Mexican-American War.
