Polk County (North Carolina)

Polk County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Columbus.

Geography

The County is located in west-central North Carolina, on the south by South Carolina and has an area of 618 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Rutherford County and Henderson County.

Polk County is divided into six townships: Columbus, Cooper Gap, Green Creek, Saluda, Tryon and White Oak.

History

Polk County was formed in 1855 from parts of Henderson County and Rutherford County. It was named after William Polk, a Colonel in the Revolutionary War.
