Washington County (North Carolina)

Washington County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Plymouth.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern North Carolina, is located in the north about 85 miles from Virginia and has an area of 1009 square kilometers, of which 197 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Chowan County, Perquimans County, Tyrrell County, Hyde County, Beaufort County, Martin County and Bertie County.

Washington County is divided into four townships: Lee Mill, Plymouth, Scuppernong and Skinnersville.

History

Washington County was formed in 1799 from parts of Tyrrell County. It was named after President George Washington.
