McDowell County (North Carolina)
McDowell County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is in Marion, named for Francis Marion, a general and hero of the American Revolutionary War.
Geography
The County is located in west-central North Carolina, is about the same distance from Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina away and has an area of 1156 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Mitchell County, Avery County, Burke County, Rutherford County, Buncombe County and Yancey County.
McDowell County is divided into ten townships: Brackett, Crooked Creek, Dysartsville, Glenwood, Higgins, Marion, Montford Cove, Nebo, North Cove and Old Fort
History
McDowell County was formed in 1842 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford County. It was named after Joseph McDowell, a member of the Congress of the United States and in Repräsententenhaus and colonel in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census of 2000, there were 42 151 people in McDowell County. Of these, 1,394 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 16,604 households and 11,954 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 92.18 percent White, 4.16 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.92 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.61 percent from other races groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.88 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,604 households out of which 30.3 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 28.0 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent of all households and 10.3 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.
22.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years 29.9 percent between 25 and 44, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 38 years. In all females there were 99.3 males. In all women aged 18 and over, 97.7 males.
The median income for a household (median) was $ 32,396, and the median income for a family was $ 37,789. Males had a median income of $ 26,609, women $ 21,640. The per capita income was $ 16,109. 11.6 percent of the population and 9.0 percent of families are below the poverty line, including 15.1 percent of children and adolescents under age 18 and 15.7 percent of 65 -year-old people.
