McDowell County (North Carolina)

McDowell County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is in Marion, named for Francis Marion, a general and hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

The County is located in west-central North Carolina, is about the same distance from Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina away and has an area of ​​1156 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Mitchell County, Avery County, Burke County, Rutherford County, Buncombe County and Yancey County.

History

McDowell County was formed in 1842 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford County. It was named after Joseph McDowell, a member of the Congress of the United States and in Repräsententenhaus and colonel in the American Revolutionary War.
