Rowan County (North Carolina)
Rowan County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Salisbury.
The County is located in west-central North Carolina, is located in the southwest about 60 miles from South Carolina and has an area of 1357 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Davie County, Davidson County, Stanly County, Cabarrus County and Iredell County.
Rowan County is divided into 16 townships: Atwell, China Grove, Cleveland, East Spencer, Franklin, Gold Hill, Kannapolis, Litaker, Locke, Morgan, Mount Ulla, Providence, Salisbury, Scotch Irish, Spencer, Steele and Unity.
Rowan County was formed on March 27, 1753 from parts of Anson County. It was named for Matthew Rowan, a political leader and governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754.
According to the census in 2000, lived in Rowan County 130 340 people in 49 940 households and 35 507 families. The population density was 98 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 80.02 percent White, 15.78 percent Black or African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.85 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.00 percent from other races groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 49 940 households out of which 32.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers and 28.9 percent were non-families. 24.7 percent of all households and 10.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.98.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.1 percent 18 to 24 years 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. In all females there were 97.6 males. In all women aged 18 and over, 95.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 37,494, and the median income for a family was $ 44,242. Males had a median income of $ 31,626 versus $ 23,437 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,071. 10.6 percent of the population and 8.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 13.7 percent of them are children and adolescents under age 18 and 11.4 percent are 65 years or older.
