Camden County (North Carolina)

Camden County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Camden.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme north-east of North Carolina, bordered to the north by Virginia, is located in the east about 30 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 792 square kilometers, of which 168 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Currituck County, Tyrrell County, Pasquotank County and Gates County.

Camden County is divided into three townships: Courthouse, Shiloh and South Mills.

History

Camden County was formed in 1777 from parts of Pasquotank County. It was named, as is the district capital of Camden, according to Sir Charles Pratt, Earl of Camden, a supporter and promoter of American colonists before the American Revolutionary War. The county was the site of the Battle of South Mills on April 19, 1862 as part of the American Civil War.
