Unicoi County, Tennessee

Unicoi County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Erwin.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern Tennessee, bordering North Carolina, is located in the north about 65 miles from Virginia and has an area of 483 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County, Carter County, Yancey County ( North Carolina), Madison County ( North Carolina) and Greene County.

History

Unicoi County was formed on March 23, 1875 from parts of Carter County and Washington County. It was named after an Indian term for the southern Appalachians.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Unicoi County 17,667 people in 7,516 households and 5,223 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer.
