Unicoi County, Tennessee

Unicoi County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Erwin.

Geography

The County is located in Eastern Tennessee, bordering North Carolina, is located in the north about 65 miles from Virginia and has an area of 483 square kilometers, of which one square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Washington County, Carter County, Yancey County ( North Carolina), Madison County ( North Carolina) and Greene County.

History

Unicoi County was formed on March 23, 1875 from parts of Carter County and Washington County. It was named after an Indian term for the southern Appalachians.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Unicoi County 17,667 people in 7,516 households and 5,223 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. Ethnically the population was made ​​up of 97.96 percent White, 0.07 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.95 percent Ängehöriger other ethnic groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.94 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

For every 100 females there were 95.1 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,863, and the median income for a family was $ 36,871. Males have a median income of $ 30,206, women $ 20,379. The per capita income was $ 15,612. 8.7 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
