2012 World Snooker Championship

The Snooker World Championship 2012 took place from 21 April to 7 May 2012 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield held and concluded the snooker season 2011/12.

Defending champion was the Scot John Higgins, who, however, in the second round with 4:13 to retire against Stephen Hendry.

In the final, Ronnie O'Sullivan put in a re-edition of the World Cup finals of 2008 against Allister Carter by 18:11, becoming the fourth time world champion.

Already in the first round, there were some surprises. So won with Cao Yupeng ( 10:6 against Mark Allen) and Jamie Jones ( 10:8 against Shaun Murphy, the 2005 World Champion ) two of the three Crucible debutant their opening game. For a further surprise was David Gilbert, Martin Gould beat with 10:8 and thus as Andrew Higginson first moved into his career in a World Cup knockout round. Overall eliminated in the first round of eight seeded players, so the record was set in 1992.

In the match against Stuart Bingham Stephen Hendry scored a maximum break, Hendry won the game relatively clear with 10:4. Neil Robertson succeeded in his opening game as the fourth player in the history of the World Cup a "Century hat-trick ". The other three players were Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Selby.

Luca Brecel was 17 years and 45 days, the youngest participants in the main round of World Snooker Championship. He thus broke the record established by Stephen Hendry (17 years, 99 days) of 1986. Moreover Brecel was the first Belgian player to reach the main round at the Crucible.

For negative headlines ensured Mark Allen and Ding Junhui after their opening defeat due to their statements at the press conference: Allen described his opponents Cao Yupeng and other Chinese players there as a " cheat " (Eng. cheaters ). In his opinion, Cao had played a puncture, which the referee Paul Collier but not evaluated as a challenge. The world number one Mark Selby played an injury under his normal form, and was defeated in his first round match Barry Hawkins with 3:10. After Ali Carter, a semifinalist in 2010, had previously played a rather weak season, he appeared in his first game in good form and defeated Mark Davis clearly with 10:2.

After the second round the five top-seeded players were eliminated. While Judd Trump yet playful a 12:9 projection against Allister Carter, John Higgins and Mark Williams lost their games each relatively clear. With Neil Robertson and Stephen Maguire are only two players from the top ten in the world rankings were thus doing.
