Garfield County (Oklahoma)
Garfield County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Enid ( Oklahoma).
Geography
The County is located north-west of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of 2745 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Grant County, Noble County, Logan County, Kingfisher County, Major County and Alfalfa County.
History
Garfield County was formed in 1893 as an original county of Cherokee country. The County was settled by white settlers during the fourth official land ownership acquisition (Oklahoma Land Run ) of 16 September 1893 which was opened by a gunshot. More than 100,000 people took to horse, on foot or by horse or ox wagon on the way to shared the colonization areas. Garfield County was named after James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Garfield County 57 813 people in 23 175 households, and 15,805 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.65 percent White, 3.26 percent African American, 2.11 percent Native American, 0.85 percent Asian, 0.49 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.02 percent from other races groups; 2.62 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 23 175 households 31.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers. 31.8 percent were non-families, 27.7 percent of all households and 12.1 percent of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.95 persons.
25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 to 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 33,006, and the median income for a family was $ 39,872. Males had a median income of $ 29,921 versus $ 20,791 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,457. 10.5 percent of families and 13.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
