History

The beginnings

1927 begins the history of AS Roma, which was founded as an idea against the strong teams from the north of Italy ( north wind ). Italo Foschi, the then President of the Association Fortitude wanted to win the title in the capital and merged the three associations Alba Audace, Roman and Fortitude (the latter had previously been the team incorporated per Roma). The officials decided that the club's colors should be those of the novel: yellow- red. President of the newly founded association was Italo Foschi. Roma was immediately recorded a success for themselves: In the 1927/28 season the club won the Coppa Coni, the precursor of modern Italy Cup ( Coppa Italia ). From establishment of the new Serie A in 1930, the club was one of these until one year always. Only in 1951 rose from AS Roma, but managed as a master of series B in 1952 immediately resurgence.

Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1961

The AS Roma and Fiorentina brought the first European Cup triumphs for Italy. In 1961, the capital city triumphed in Fairs Cup, the predecessor of the UEFA Cup, and the club from Florence in the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the two finals against Birmingham City, there was initially a 2-2 away in Rome and a 2-0 triumph. 1964 AS Roma won the first Coppa Italia in 1969 was followed by the second.

The Golden Eighties

The hitherto most successful phase witnessed the Roma in the eighties. We kicked off 1980, the third Coppa Italia, which also was 1981, 1984 and 1986, winning the club. Above all, however, the club was crowned in the 1982/83 season for only the second time since 1941/42, the Italian champions. A disappointment experienced the club in the subsequent Champions' Cup. With wins over IFK Gothenburg (3:0, 1:2 ), the army club Sofia (1-0, 1-0), BFC Dynamo (3:0, 1:2 ) and Dundee United ( 0:2, 3:0 ) you qualified for the finals in Rome 's Olympic Stadium. This went against Liverpool but in the penalty shoot-out with 2:4 lost after 120 minutes it was 1-1 thanks to goals from Neal (Liverpool ) or Pruzzo ( Rome) stood. The biggest disappointment, however witnessed the club when he retired in 1981, in the European Cup Winners' Cup after a 3-0 home win against FC Carl Zeiss Jena 0-4 in the first round.

Skinny nineties despite the seventh Cup victory

The nineties, however, were a lean decade for AS Roma. Although succeeded 1991, the seventh victory in the Coppa Italia, but you also lost the UEFA Cup final in 1991 against Inter Milan (0-2, 1-0) and 1993 even the national cup final against AC Torino. In the championship of the Roma finished tenth in 1993 and 1997, even only twelfth.

The new millennium: Third Master title in 2001

Provisional last big highlight was the third league title ( after 1942 and 1983 ) in 2001, as AS Roma local rivals Lazio replaced at the top of Serie A under the government of Star coach Fabio Capello. This was followed next four runner-up ( 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 ), two mediocre eighth places (2003 and 2005) in Serie A. After the departure of Capello with the end of the 2003/04 season, the team earned the reputation of being un-trainable to be scorned and with Cesare Prandelli, Rudi Völler, Luigi Delneri and Bruno Conti four supervisors within one season.

Record: 11 Wins in a row

Coming from Udinese Calcio took over on 1 July 2005 Luciano Spalletti as coach. In the season 2005/2006 the first Roma finished fifth, which would have entitled to participate in the UEFA Cup. After a poor start to the season the team was able to win at least eleven consecutive matches, which at that time meant a new Italian record (today contributes Inter Milan this record with 17 games won in a row). Due to the football scandal in Italy ( Juventus relegation, points deduction for AC Milan, ACF Florence, Lazio Rome) Roma was subsequently declared the runner-up and was thus able to play in the Champions League.

The debacle of Manchester (April 2007)

It could be off on the way to the quarter- finals of the Champions League Olympique Lyon (0-0 H / A 2-0 ). However, the quarter-finals was also a terminus for the Roma. The victory of Roma in the first leg 2-1 was determined by Fankrawalle, gradually overshadowed during the match and a brutal crackdown by the Italian police in the away sector of the United fans. In the return match on 10 April 2007 subject to the Romans at Manchester United at Old Trafford with a historic debacle of 1:7.

Six scorers of people (1931 ) to Totti ( 2007)

In the league fared AS Roma much better and she reached the end of the 2006/07 season the second place and was thus qualified for the Champions League 2007 /08. Furthermore, we added the champions Inter Milan at the only defeat of the season ( 3-1 at the San Siro ). A performer of this successful season was Francesco Totti, who set his personal scoring record with 26 goals in a year and took the top scorer. A brand that also for winning the Golden Boot ( top scorer in Europe) handed. In addition, the midfielder scored four goals in the Champions League last season. Totti was already the sixth Roma player who was Italian scorer. In front of him was this feat also Rodolfo Volk ( 1931/29 goals), Enrique Guaita ( 1935/28 goals), Dino da Costa ( 1957/22 goals), Pedro Manfredini ( 1963/19 goals) and three times Roberto Pruzzo ( 1981/18 able goals, 1982/15 Goals and 1986/19 goals).

Roller Cup victory in 2007

In the cup it was possible the team in the years 2003, 2005 and 2006 to collect the final, however, where they each subject. 2007 abolished the AS Roma again the finals of the Coppa Italia, it was the opponent for the third time in a row, Inter Milan. In this pairing, the Roma scored the eighth Cup victory after a 6-2 in the first leg and a 1:2 away defeat. Almost three months later, the club got back to Inter in the Supercoppa Italiana was maintained in Milan 1-0 again the upper hand. It was the second Supercoppa after 2001.

The triumph over Real Madrid (February 2008)

As Vice- Champion 2007 AS Roma League was qualified in 2007/ 08 fix for the Champions and was in second group stage. In the second round, the Italians met with Real Madrid that could defeat with the total score of 4:2. After the 2-1 in the home game ( with goals from Pizarro and Mancini after early deficit ) the Romans were victorious also away on February 19, 2008 2-1 with goals from Vucinic and Taddei at an interim compensation of Raúl. In addition, in this game, Aquilani and Vucinic met (both Roma ) and Baptista (Madrid ) only aluminum. In the quarterfinals, beginning of April, but then as the year before against Manchester United terminus ( 0:2 / 0:1 and h / a).

For the 10th time Second

The Championship 2007/ 08 took the club from the capital, which was situated in February eleven points behind Inter Milan in second place, once again thrilling, the decision should fall only on the 38th and final day. In these Inter went as the leader with 82 points ahead of AS Roma with 81 However, while the Romans in Catania played despite earlier guidance by Vucinic only 1-1 (1-0 ), Inter won at Parma thanks to two goals from Ibrahimovic after the break with 2-0. Thus AS Rome was for a total of ten times, the third time in a row and the fifth time in the last seven years have been second in Serie A.

Ninth Cup triumph

As in the past three years was also the FA Cup final again in 2008 Inter Milan vs AS Roma. Unlike before the 60th edition of the Coppa Italia was but this time decided not to return game, but only in a match. This took place in the Roman Olympic Stadium and ended 2-1 (1-0 ) for AS Roma. The goals were scored by Philippe Mexes and Simone Perrotta and Pele. For the capital city, it was a little revenge for the earlier missed at the weekend against Inter Championship, the second win in a row and the ninth in total already, so they could catch up with the previous sole record holder Juventus. In addition, it was the 15th overall playoff participation, which means Italian record against Torino (14).

Financial difficulties

The constant transfer compete with the big clubs from the north, but especially in particular with the Roman city rivals Lazio, AS Roma crashed in the meantime into financial difficulties. Service providers such as the Argentine Walter Samuel and the Brazilians Lima and Emerson had to be transferred within the Serie A or abroad. Only Francesco Totti - captain, playmaker and scorer in personal union - was never an issue when it comes to a possible sale. The President Franco Sensi with 51 percent held Italpetroli - Owner of AS Roma - has about 370 million euros of debt, according to newspaper reports. Daughter and AS Roma managing director Rosella Sensi, which was chosen and so on 29 August 2008 ten days after the death of her father by an absolute majority for President of the club, has therefore conducted in summer 2010, a sale of the club in the way. In April 2011, a U.S. consortium took over to the investor Thomas DiBenedetto majority interest in the club, whereupon Sensi announced its resignation from the presidency in June of the same year. In July 2011, the 61 -year-old DiBenedetto was introduced as the new club president.
