Charles G. Conn

Charles Gerard Conn ( born January 29, 1844 in Phelps, Ontario County, New York, † January 5, 1931 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician. Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1851, Charles Conn came with his parents to Elkhart in Indiana, where he attended the public schools. During the Civil War he served in the army of the Union. There he played until 1862 in a regimental band; after he was arming protected. He was wounded and was taken prisoner, from which he was released only at end of the war. He then worked in the food and bakery industries. Since 1877, he also musical instruments for bands ago.

Politically, Conn was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1880 and 1883 he served as mayor of Elkhart. In 1889 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Indiana; the following year he founded the newspaper " Elkhart Daily Truth". In the congressional elections of 1892 Conn was in the 13th electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Benjamin F. Shively on March 4, 1893. Since he resigned in 1894 to run again, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1895. During his time in the federal capital, he was at times the owner of the newspaper " Washington Times ", which has no relation to today's " Washington Times ".

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Charles Conn worked again as a manufacturer of musical instruments. In 1916, he withdrew into retirement, which he spent in Los Angeles. There he is on January 5, 1931 also died.
