Frank Hanly

James Franklin "Frank" Hanly (* April 4, 1863 in St. Joseph, Champaign County, Illinois; † August 1, 1920 in Dennison, Ohio ) was an American politician and between 1905 and 1909 the 26th Governor of the State of Indiana.

Early years and political rise

Frank Hanly attended the local schools until 1881 his home in Illinois. Then he had to earn money issue in the winter months as a teacher self teaching while he was working as a temporary worker in various areas in the summer. With the money earned a law degree was funded, which he completed in 1889. After his admission to the bar he opened in Williamsport (Indiana) a law firm. Hanly was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1890 and 1891 he sat in the Senate of Indiana; 1895 to 1897 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States in Washington. In 1899 he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate. In 1904 he went to in the gubernatorial election in Indiana, and sat down with 53.5 percent of the vote to Democrat John W. Kern through.

Governor of Indiana

Hanly joined his four -year term on January 9, 1905. At that time, built on the state fair grounds, the Coliseum, a public sports stadium. In Rockville, a tuberculosis hospital was built in Clermont was an industrial training school for girls only. Hanly was strong supporter of Prohibition, fighting, gambling, horse betting and corruption. He was also against fellow party members and its own government. Hanly led Indiana in a forced sterilization of some prisoners. This law was enacted by his successor Thomas Riley Marshall immediately suspended. In 1921 the Supreme Court declared this law as unconstitutional.

Even after the end of his term fighting Hanly for a strict ban on alcohol. He traveled the entire United States and even made a visit to France to represent its position in the Prohibition question. He joined the Prohibition Party and was its presidential candidate in 1916. In this election, Woodrow Wilson was elected to a second term. Hanly received just 1.2% of the vote.

Frank Hanly was born on August 1, 1920 in a car accident. He was married to Eva Augusta Rachel Simmer. The couple had a child together.
