Asa H. Willie

Asa Hoxie Willie ( born October 11, 1829 in Washington, Georgia, † March 16, 1899 in Galveston, Texas) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Asa Willie received a good private school. In 1846 he came to Brenham, Texas. After studying law and his 1848 was admitted as a lawyer, he started to work there in his new profession. Between 1852 and 1854 he was a prosecutor in the third judicial district of Texas. During the Civil War Willie served as a Major in the army of the Confederacy. In 1866 he moved to Galveston and in 1867 he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Texas. However, he had to give up under pressure from the military commander of the Union forces again this office.

Politically, Willie member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1872 he was in the then newly established sixth electoral district of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1873. Since he resigned in 1874 to further candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1875.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Asa Willie again practiced as a lawyer. Between 1882 and 1888 he was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas. Subsequently, he worked again as a lawyer. He died on March 16, 1899 in Galveston.
