John B. Long

John Benjamin Long ( born September 8, 1843 in Douglass, Nacogdoches County, Texas, † April 27, 1924 in Rusk, Texas ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Already in 1846 John Long came with his parents to Rusk in Cherokee County, where he attended private schools. During the Civil War he served in the cavalry in the army of the Confederacy. After the war he studied law; but he has never worked as a lawyer. Instead, he worked as a planter. Politically, Long joined the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1890 he was in the second electoral district of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Harrison Martin on March 4, 1891. Since he was not nominated by his party for re-election in 1892, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1893. Since 1886, Long was also active in the newspaper business in Rusk. This work he continued until 1905. In the years 1913 and 1914 he was a deputy in the Texas House of Representatives. He died on 27 April 1924 in Rusk, where he was also buried.
