Walter E. Rogers

Walter Edward Rogers ( born July 19, 1908 in Texarkana, Arkansas; † 31 May 2001, Naples, Florida ) was an American politician. He represented the state of Texas as a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Walter Rogers graduated from the Austin College in Sherman in 1926 with a Bachelor of Arts in 1935 and received at the University of Texas at Austin his doctor. After he had obtained his license to practice law in 1938, he opened a practice in Pampa. Later he worked until 1940 as a prosecutor there. He then served as District Attorney of the 31st Judicial District of Texas 1943-1947. Subsequently, Rogers was a delegate of the Democratic Convention of Texas 1950-1956, and 1960. Moreover, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions 1952-1964.

Policy

Rogers was elected as a Democrat in the 82nd and the seven succeeding Congresses. His term lasted from January 3, 1951 to January 3, 1967. Thereafter, he decided to no longer for the 90th Congress in 1966 to run for office. He returned to his old job as a lawyer, which he held until his death on 31 May 2001 in Naples.

During his tenure in Congress, he was involved in 1956 the Constitution of the Southern Manifesto, which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.
