Silvestre Reyes

Silvestre Reyes ( born November 10, 1944 in Canutillo, El Paso County, Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. Between 1997 and 2013 he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Texas.

Biography

After visiting the Canutillo High School, he studied 1964-1966, first at the University of Texas at Austin and then at the University of Texas at El Paso ( UTEP ) but without obtaining a degree. After completing his military service in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 he spent a year as a member of the School Board ( School Board ) his hometown Canutillo. Subsequently, he was from 1969 to 1995 Employees of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Administration ( Immigration and Naturalization Service ). In the meantime, he completed studies at the El Paso Community College and in 1976 earned an associate degree (AA).

1996 Reyes was first elected as a Democratic candidate for member of the U.S. House of Representatives and represented there by six re- elections since the January 3, 1997 the 16th Congressional District of Texas. Since 2007 he was also chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on the Intelligence (Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence ). Besides Reyes, who represented the interests of Hispanics in Congress because of his background, was also a member of the Armed Services Committee ( Committee on Armed Services). In 2012 he was defeated in the primaries of his party against Beto O'Rourke.
