Edward Degener

Life

After studying in Germany and England Degener was twice Member of Parliament in the duchy of Anhalt- Dessau. In 1850 he immigrated to the "Latin Settlement " Sisterdale from the Texas Kendall County and settled there in the community many other German " free-thinker " and so -called " Latin " as a farmer. His house he bought from zinc Nicolaus ( 1812-1887 ). Among these settlers was in 1852, also for a short time, the journalist and educator Adolph Douai ( 1819-1888 ), later the founder of the first kindergarten in the United States.

During the American Civil War (1861-1865) Degener were executed both sons of the Army of the Confederate States for treason and he himself imprisoned because he had fought against slavery and committed to the objectives of the Union.
