George W. Whitmore

George Washington Whitmore ( born August 26, 1824 McMinn County, Tennessee; † October 14, 1876 in Tyler, Texas ) was an American politician. Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Whitmore attended the public schools of his home. In 1848 he moved to Texas. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Tyler to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In the years 1852, 1853 and 1858 he was a deputy in the Texas House of Representatives; In 1866, he acted as attorney for the ninth judicial district of his state. A year later, in 1867, he was in bankruptcy.

After the re- admission of the State of Texas to the Union Whitmore was a candidate of the Republican Party in Congress in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 30 March 1870. Since he has not been confirmed at the regular congressional elections of 1870, he was able to complete only the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1871. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives George Whitmore again practiced as a lawyer. He died on October 14, 1876 in Tyler, where he was also buried.
