George H. Mahon

George Herman Mahon ( born September 22, 1900 in Mahon near Haynesville, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, † November 19, 1985 in San Angelo, Texas ) was an American politician. He represented the state of Texas as a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Mahon was born in September 1900 near Haynesville in Louisiana. After his family moved to Texas, where they settled on a farm in Loraine, Mitchell County. Mahon attended public school and graduated in 1918 at the high school. He then attended the Simmons University in Abilene and graduated there in 1924 with a Bachelor of Arts. Then he made in 1925 his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he also studied at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. His admission to the bar he received in 1925 and then opened a practice in Colorado. After he was elected in 1926 as the District Attorney of Mitchell County. He then worked as District Attorney for the 32nd Judicial District of Texas between 1927 and 1933.

Policy

Mahon was a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions 1936-1964. Moreover, he headed 1964-1978 Smithsonian Institution. He was also elected as a Democrat in the 74th and the 21 subsequent Congresses. His term came from 3 January 1935 to 3 January 1979. He decided in 1978 to the 96th Congress no longer to run. During his tenure in Congress, he was chairman of the Committee on Appropriations ( 88th to 95th Congress ) and the Joint Committee on Reduction of Federal Expenditures ( 90th to 93rd Congress ). In addition, he refused to sign the Southern Manifesto in 1956, which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

George Mahon died November 19, 1985 in San Angelo. He was buried at the City Cemetery in Loraine.
