Walter Gresham (Texas politician)

Walter Gresham (* July 22, 1841 in Newtown, King and Queen County, Virginia; † November 6, 1920 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Walter Gresham attended Stevensville Academy and the Edgeville Academy. Then he studied until 1863 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Subsequently, he was a soldier in the army of the Confederacy during the Civil War. After studying law and his 1867 was admitted to the bar he began to work in Galveston in this profession. In 1872 he was a district attorney in his new home. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1886 and 1891 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Texas.

In the congressional elections of 1892 Gresham was elected the tenth electoral district of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Joseph D. Sayers on March 4, 1893. Since he has not been confirmed in 1894, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1895. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Gresham again practiced as a lawyer in Galveston. He died on November 6, 1920 in Washington, and was buried in Galveston.
