Henry B. Gonzalez

Henry Barbosa Gonzalez ( May 3, 1916 in San Antonio, Texas, † November 28, 2000 ) was an American politician. Between 1961 and 1999 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Gonzalez studied at the University of Texas in Austin and graduated from then until 1935, the San Antonio College. Subsequently, he studied until 1943 at the St. Mary's University School of Law Jura. In the following years he worked as a consultant and from 1945 to 1947 as head of the Probation Board in Bexar County. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. From 1953 to 1956 he was a member of the City Council of San Antonio. Then he sat 1956-1961 in the Senate of Texas.

Following the resignation of Mr Paul Joseph Kilday Gonzalez was at the due election for the 20th seat of Texas as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 4 November 1961. After 18 Re-elections he could remain until January 3, 1999 at the Congress. In this time were, among others, the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal and the culmination of the civil rights movement. From 1977 to 1979, Gonzalez Chairman of the Select Committee on Assassinations, which examined the political assassinations of the 1960s again. These included the attacks on President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Between 1989 and 1995 led Gonzalez to the Finance Committee.

At the end of his time as a parliamentarian, he fell ill and was for over a year not attend the meetings of the Congress. For this reason he resigned in 1998 on another candidacy. He managed, however, that his son Charles received his party's nomination for his seat. This was also elected as his successor. The younger Gonzalez carry out his mandate until today. His father died on 28 November 2000 in San Antonio.
