Hatton W. Sumners

Hatton William Sumners (* May 30, 1875 in Fayetteville, Tennessee, † April 19, 1962 in Dallas, Texas ) was an American politician. Between 1913 and 1947 he represented the state of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1893 Hatton Sumners came to Garland in Texas. After studying law and his 1897 was admitted to the bar he began to work in Dallas in this profession. Between 1900 and 1902 he was a prosecutor in Dallas County. He was going against, among others, gambling, corruption and electoral fraud. In 1906 and 1907 he was president of the County Attorney's Association of Texas, the Association of District Attorneys at the state level. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1912 was Sumners in the then newly established 18th electoral district of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1913. After 16 re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1947 a total of 17 legislative periods. In this time were the First and the Second World War. From 1933 to 1941, most of the New Deal legislation of the Federal Government were passed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Also, were ratified during his time as a congressman of the 16th, the 17th, the 18th, the 19th, the 20th and the 21st Amendment. Since 1915 Sumners represented as the successor of James Andrew Beall the fifth district of his state. From 1931 to 1947 he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Sumners was entrusted during his time as a congressman three times with the implementation of impeachment against various federal judge. In 1946 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Hatton Sumners was research director of the South Western Foundation. In 1949 he founded the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation, which awards scholarships to gifted children. He died on April 19, 1962 in Dallas.
