Joe M. Kilgore

Joe Madison Kilgore ( born December 10, 1918, as Brownwood, Texas, † February 10, 1999 in Austin, Texas ) was an American politician. He represented the state of Texas as a deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joe Kilgore visited briefly the public school in Rising Star. After 1929 his family moved to Mission in Hidalgo County. There he attended the public school and the Westmoreland College (now Trinity University ) in San Antonio 1935-1936.

Kilgore interrupted his studies at the Law Department of the University of Texas in July 1941 and pledged to the United States Army Air Corps. There he served as a fighter pilot in combat missions in the Mediterranean. Then he retired in 1945 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Lieutenant Colonel) from the army from. During the war it was the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two " oak leaf cluster " award.

Policy

After leaving the army he returned to the Law School of the University of Texas. His admission to the bar he received in 1946 and then opened a practice in Edinburgh. Subsequently, he was from 1947 to 1954 deputy in the Texas House of Representatives. He also was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1956, 1960 and 1968. Was chosen him as a Democrat to the 84th and the four subsequent Congresses. His term lasted from January 3, 1955 to January 3, 1965. He decided in 1964 to the 89th Congress no longer to run. Kilgore returned to his old job back as a lawyer. During his tenure in Congress, he refused to sign the Southern Manifesto, which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

Joe Kilgore died on 10 February 1999 in Austin. He was buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
