Jesse Overstreet

Jesse E. Overstreet ( born December 14, 1859 in Franklin, Indiana, † May 27, 1910 in Indianapolis, Indiana ) was an American politician. Between 1895 and 1909 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jesse Overstreet attended the public schools of his home including the Franklin High School, where he graduated in 1877, and the Franklin College, where he graduated in 1882. After a subsequent law degree in 1886 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Franklin to work in this profession.

Politically, Overstreet member of the Republican Party. In 1892 he was a member of the State Board in Indiana. In the congressional elections of 1894 he was in the fifth electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of George W. Cooper on March 4, 1895. After six re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1909 seven legislative sessions. Since 1897 he represented here as the successor of Charles L. Henry the seventh district of his state. . During his term as congressman of the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell from 1899 to 1903 Overstreet Chairman of the Committee to monitor the expenditure of the Department of Justice; 1903-1909 he was head of the postal committee.

In 1908, he defeated Democrat Charles A. Korbly. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Overstreet practiced as a lawyer again. He died on 27 May 1910 in Indianapolis and was buried in Columbus.
