John Brademas

John W. Brademas ( born March 2, 1927 in Mishawaka, Indiana ) is a retired American politician. Between 1959 and 1981 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Brademas attended Central High School in South Bend. Between 1945 and 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy. Then he studied until 1949 at Harvard University until 1954 and at the University of Oxford in England. Politically, Brademas joined the Democratic Party. In 1955, he worked for U.S. Senator Patrick V. McNamara of Michigan. At the same time he also worked for Congressman Thomas Ashley from Ohio and Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson. Between 1957 and 1958 he was a faculty member at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame.

In the years 1954 and 1956 he was a candidate yet each unsuccessfully for Congress. In the congressional elections of 1958, Brademas was then in the third electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of F. Jay Nimtz on January 3, 1959. After ten re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1981 eleven legislative periods. In 1959 he was a member of the congressional delegation on the first Inter-American Conference in the Peruvian capital Lima. During his time as a congressman of the Vietnam War took place. 1974 overshadowed the Watergate scandal and the work of the U.S. House of Representatives. In those years, ended the civil rights movement. 1980 defeated John Brademas, at this time, Whip of the Democratic majority party, the Republicans, John P. Hiler.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives was Brademas successor of John C. Sawhill as president of the New York University in New York City. He continued in this position 1981-1992. Subsequently Brademas served on numerous committees that dealt with culture, education, foreign policy, technology, or history. He was a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the New York Stock Exchange. Today, he is also chairman of the American Ditchley Foundation.
