History

The plans for a modern football stadium for the football club Ajax Amsterdam existed in the 1980s. Originally the Arena part of Amsterdam's candidacy for the 1992 Summer Olympics, which were awarded to Barcelona, however. It was opened by Queen Beatrix on 14 August 1996 and has 50,820 seats, also 52 boxes. Tina Turner was the first star, who was in 1996 a concert at the Arena. In three consecutive nights, the stadium was filled with a total of more than 150,000 people. The Arena was used in Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Arena is an excellent stadium by UEFA category 4 The football club Ajax Amsterdam carries in the stadium its home games.

As one of the first, the stadium has a closable roof, which allows all-weather use. This roof consists of a steel and glass structure, and has a total area of 33 625 m². Of which in turn can be 26 028 m² by two moving parts (each 40 x 118 m, 520 tons ) open in 20 minutes.

A car park and a road are at different levels under the stadium. These explain the height of the building of 77 m. The floor area is 235 x 180 m.

The lawn of this stadium is considered as a weak point. Like all grass grow under one roof, it grows poorly and has to be replaced regularly. The reason for this is mainly the lack of light intensity. This was also the reason why here at the European Football Championship 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands, the opening match or the final was played, they found in the similarly-sized stadiums in Brussels and Rotterdam instead. Since 2008, a new technique is used which stimulates the growth of the lawn with special lights.

The spectators in the pure football arena without running track are separated by a relatively wide trench from the field. This eliminates the need to screen and fences. This trench also serves as a delivery zone and is about four feet wide.

Before Ajax Amsterdam in the arena fought out their home games, the club played in the now-demolished club's stadium De Meer, which summed up to around 30,000, and finally 19,000 places in its history, and its time completely obsolete, now renovated, 60,000 -seat Olympic Stadium from 1928.

Not only Ajax Amsterdam is native in the arena today. There also concerts and other large events.
