Becheln

Becheln is a municipality in the Rhein- Lahn-Kreis in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Bad Ems.

Location

Becheln is an exclave of the municipality of Bad Ems in Nassau Nature Park of the Taunus heights. The village with views over the Rhine Valley in the Hunsrück lies on the watershed between the Rhine and Lahn. Further larger settlements are the town of Bad Ems and the town of Nassau (each about 7 km away), the city of Lahnstein (approx. 10 km) and the regional center of Koblenz ( 17 km).

History

In the woods around Becheln tumuli are signs of earlier settlement. Remnants of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes are visible in the township's woods Becheln even today. For Roman past see separate article fortlet Becheln. Becheln itself goes back to at least the 13th century. The Romanesque church tower is the oldest surviving structure in Becheln and also goes back to the 13th century.

The local council in Becheln consists of twelve council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 of personalized proportional representation, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Coat of arms

The Lilienzepterrad on a white over blue divided shield in the coat of arms dates back to the family coat of arms of the medieval noble family of Becheln. The rose is based on the coat of arms of the Barons and from the stone.

Culture and sights

Structures

The evangelical church goes back to a church of the 13th century. Until the 18th century the church was again rebuilt and further elaborated. Today it has a Romanesque tower and Gothic frescoes, murals and sculptures inside.
