German federal election, 1877

The Reichstag elections of 1877 was the election of the 3rd German Reichstag. It took place on 10 January 1877.

The turnout was 60.6 %, in line with that of 1874.

Gains in this election recorded the conservative forces at the expense of the Liberals. In it saw Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, who for some time by the free trade for over went tariff policy (dismissal Rudolph von Delbrück 1876), confirmed. The tensions between the Chancellor and the Liberals were exacerbated now increasingly. In this context, it came to the " chancellor crisis " (see Albrecht von Stosch ).

The German conservative party founded in 1876 successfully entered the successor to the Prussian Old Conservatives. The now united socialists, 1874 still divided in Workers 'Association and Workers' Party, again able to increase their number of seats. The same was true for the ( southern) German People's Party, which established itself in Württemberg. The center stabilized as the second strongest force.

After attempts on Kaiser Wilhelm I and disputes over the planned socialist law of the third Reichstag was dissolved at the request of Bismarck by the Emperor, and it came to the general election in 1878.
