Greeley County (Nebraska)

Greeley County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Greeley.

Geography

The County is located east of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 1478 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Wheeler County, Boone County, Nance County, Howard County, Sherman County and Valley County.

History

Greeley County was formed in 1871. It was named after Horace Greeley, an early publicists.

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,714 people in Greeley County. Of these, 62 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 1,077 households, and 734 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.9 percent white, 0.7 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.8 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.5 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.9 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,077 households out of which 29.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.0 percent were married couples living together, 6.4 percent were single mothers, 31.8 percent were non-families, 30.5 percent of all households and 18.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.08.

Based on the county the population was spread from 26.9 percent population under 18 years, 5.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 21.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years and 23.2 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 men statistically.
