Sherman County (Nebraska)

Sherman County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Loup City, which according to the Loup River was named.

Geography

The County is located just southeast of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 1481 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Howard County, Buffalo County, Custer County, Valley County and Greeley County.

History

Sherman County was formed on 1871. It was named after General William Tecumseh Sherman.

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,318 people in Sherman County. Of these, 55 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 1,394 households, and 935 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.5 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.5 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.5 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.0 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,394 households out of which 27.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 5.7 percent were single mothers, 32.9 percent were non-families, 30.4 percent of all households and 16.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.

Based on the county the population was spread from 24.5 percent population under 18 years, 4.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 23.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 28,646, and the median income for a family was $ 34,821. Males have a median income of $ 23,065, women $ 17,269. The per capita income was $ 14,064. 8.0 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 19.4 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 12.8 percent of seniors aged 65 and over.
