Perkins County (Nebraska)
Perkins County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Grant, which was named after President Ulysses S. Grant.
Geography
The County is located in southwest Nebraska, on the east by Colorado and has an area of 2290 square kilometers, of which 3 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lincoln County, Hayes County, Chase County and Keith County.
History
Perkins County was formed in 1887. It was named after Charles E. Perkins, a president of a railroad company.
The area of the county was in the 19th century from the south (Kansas) to the north ( Dakota) traversed by herds of cattle; Cowboys often worked as former black slaves. With the advance of settlers from the east, the routes had gradually moved towards the west of the county and later completely abandoned. The section through the Perkins County was for the herds due to the aridity of the land the hardest.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Perkins County 3,200 people in 1,275 households and 893 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.69 percent White, 0.03 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, and 1.34 percent from other races; 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.31 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,275 households out of which 32.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.9 percent were married couples living together, 4.6 percent were single mothers, 29.9 percent were non-families, 27.5 percent of all households and 15.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.
Based on the county the population was spread from 26.6 percent population under 18 years, 6.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 19.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.8 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 34,205, and the median income for a family was $ 42,112. Males had a median income of $ 28,438, women $ 19,881. The per capita income was $ 17,830. 9.5 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 20.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 8.9 percent of those 65 years.
