Hayes County, Nebraska

Hayes County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hayes Center, which was named after its central location in the county.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme lower southwest corner of Nebraska, is in the south about 40 miles from Kansas, and to the west about 50 miles from Colorado and has an area of 1848 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Frontier County, Hitchcock County, Dundy County, Chase County, Perkins County and Lincoln County.

History

Hayes County was formed in 1877. It was named after the President Rutherford B. Hayes.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Hayes County 1,068 people in 430 households and 312 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.2 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.3 percent Asian and 1.8 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.6 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.5 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 430 households out of which 28.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 67.0 percent were married couples living together, 2.6 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 26.5 percent of all households and 15.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.

Based on the county the population was spread from 26.6 percent population under 18 years, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 21.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 26.5 percent between 45 and 64 years and 19.9 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 102.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 26,667, and the median income for a family was $ 31,125. Males have a median income of $ 19,211, women $ 16,806. The per capita income was $ 14,099. 14.6 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 26.2 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 12.9 percent of those 65 years.
