Károly Palotai

Károly Palotai ( born September 11, 1935) is a former Hungarian football player and umpire.

He played himself a successful football Serie A club Gyori ETO FC in the Hungarian and won with the national team the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964. But He became world famous as one of the outstanding referee of the 1970s and 1980s.

In addition to numerous national games, he also launched a number of games at international level. Highlights were the three participations in the Football World Cup in 1974, 1978 and 1982 and the UEFA European Football Championship in 1980 and the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. In addition, he also directed the finale in the European Champions Cup in 1976 between FC Bayern Munich and AS Saint- Étienne, and 1981 between Real Madrid and Liverpool as well as the first leg of the finals in the UEFA Cup 1974/75 between Borussia Moenchengladbach and FC Twente Enschede.
