Mode

Before the season an increase of two national leagues was decided on six teams, which in the previous year athletic relegated clubs FC Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt could remain in the league.

Like last year, the league was first played in two seasons, the Bundesliga Bundesliga West and the South. The respective top three teams after a single round then played in a single-track double round of the German champions. The three last-place teams each played in a regional split relegation round against the three best teams in the league North or South for their place in the Bundesliga.
