2002–03 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season

The DEL 2002/03 season was the ninth season of the German Ice Hockey League. The regular season began on 6 September 2002 and ended on March 9, 2003, the play- off round was played on March 12. German masters were the Krefeld Penguins. Since the Schwenningen Wild Wings ERC permit withdrawn due to an ongoing bankruptcy proceeding, sporting relegated Frankfurt Lions was allowed to remain in the league.

Mode and rules

While the top eight teams in the preliminary round for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed played in a play -down round against relegation. For the teams ranked nine to twelve the season had ended after the first round.

Preliminary round

After the license of the Munich Barons to Hamburg was changed, the newly founded Hamburg Freezers played a surprisingly good season in which they were severed from last to eighth and thus advance a play- off place. With an average attendance of 10,713 and a tight quarter-final defeat against the Berlin Freezers finally ended their first season. The Iserlohn Roosters of the DEL club with the smallest budget, could also surprise and missed under coach Greg Poss only about the play-offs, as they occupied at the end with a point behind Hamburg Rank 9.

The two bottom team Frankfurt Lions and Schwenningen ERC Wild Wings played from March 12 in a play -down serial mode " Best of Seven" against relegation.

Quarterfinals

The quarter-final was played from 12 March 2003 " Best of Seven" mode. Semifinal

The biggest surprise of the season, Krefeld Penguins were for the second time in their history German masters. After two wins in the first two games, the Penguins were on the verge ( 1996/97 against Kassel ) to be in accordance with the Adler Mannheim as a second team in the DEL history with a sweep, ie a series without a defeat, German champion. This was also the Bundesliga times only the EC Hedos Munich in the final series of the season 1993/94 has succeeded against the Düsseldorf EC.
