Ogemaw County, Michigan
Ogemaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is West Branch.
Geography
The County is located in the central north east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is in the east about 45 miles from Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, away and has an area of 1488 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Oscoda County, Iosco County, Arenac County, Gladwin County and Roscommon County.
History
Ogemaw County was formed in 1840 as an original county of free territory. In 1867 it went on in Iosco County and in 1873 again independent County. It was named after the Indian word ogimaa whose meaning is boss, leader or chief.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Ogemaw County 21 645 people in 8,842 households and 6,189 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.48 percent White, 0.13 percent African American, 0.60 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.13 percent from other races groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.16 per cent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,842 households out of which 27.1 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers and 30.0 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent of all households and 12.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.87.
23.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent 18 to 24 years 24.4 percent between 25 and 44, 27.0 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 18.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 30 474 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family $ 34,988. Males have a median income of $ 31,003, women $ 20,544. The per capita income was $ 15,768. 11.0 percent of families and 14.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
