Ogemaw County, Michigan

Ogemaw County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is West Branch.

Geography

The County is located in the central north east of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan is in the east about 45 miles from Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, away and has an area of ​​1488 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Oscoda County, Iosco County, Arenac County, Gladwin County and Roscommon County.

History

Ogemaw County was formed in 1840 as an original county of free territory. In 1867 it went on in Iosco County and in 1873 again independent County. It was named after the Indian word ogimaa whose meaning is boss, leader or chief.
