Alpena County, Michigan

Alpena County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Alpena.

Geography

The County is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the east by Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​4390 square kilometers, of which 2903 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Alcona County, Montmorency County and Presque Isle County.

History

Alpena County was formed in 1840 as Anamickee County from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.

According to the census of 2000, there were 31,314 people in Alpena County. Of these, 567 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 12,818 households and 8,690 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer.
