Alpena County, Michigan
Alpena County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Alpena.
Geography
The County is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the east by Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 4390 square kilometers, of which 2903 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Alcona County, Montmorency County and Presque Isle County.
History
Alpena County was formed in 1840 as Anamickee County from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.

According to the census of 2000, there were 31,314 people in Alpena County. Of these, 567 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 12,818 households and 8,690 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.21 percent White, 0.25 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.33 percent Asian, and 0.12 percent from other races; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,818 households out of which 29.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 32.2 percent were non-families. 27.8 percent of all households and 13.3 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.93.
23.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.8 percent 18 to 24 years 26.5 percent between 25 and 44, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 17.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 34,177, and the median income for a family $ 42,366. Males have a median income of $ 34,571, women $ 21,962. The per capita income was $ 17,566. 7.7 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
