Alcona County, Michigan
Alcona County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Harrisville.
Geography
The County is located in the northeast of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the east by Lake Huron, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 4637 square kilometers, of which 2891 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Iosco County, Oscoda County and Alpena County. Belonging is the Hubbard Lake.
History
Alcona County was formed in 1869 as an original county of free territory. Between 1840 and 1843, the boundaries were defined as Negwegon County, a management of the site was not. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.

According to the census of 2000, there were 11,719 people in the Alcona County. Of these, 199 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,132 households and 3,566 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.04 percent White, 0.16 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.06 percent from other races groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.69 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,132 households out of which 20.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 5.8 percent were single mothers and 30.5 percent were non-families. 26.6 percent of all households and 14.2 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.67 persons.
19.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.6 percent 18 to 24 years 20.9 percent between 25 and 44, 31.0 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 24.5 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 102.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 31,362, and the median income for a family $ 35,669. Males have a median income of $ 29,712, women $ 20,566. The per capita income was $ 17,653. 9.1 percent of families and 12.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
