Ontonagon County, Michigan

Ontonagon County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ontonagon.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme west derOberen Peninsula of Michigan, is bordered on the north by Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​9690 square kilometers, of which 6293 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Houghton County, Iron County, Gogebic County and on Lake Superior in the Keweenaw County.

History

Ontonagon County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after the order of early French conquerors Nantounagon name for a small river in the area.
