Menominee County (Michigan)

Menominee County is a county located in the state of Michigan 's Upper Peninsula with direct border with Wisconsin. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Menominee.

History

1634 ended the French explorer Jean Nicolet in La Baye ( Green Bay today ). He explored the grounds and came across settlements of the Menominee tribe at the mouth of the Menominee River, where the city is to find Menominee today. The terrain in the area of the estuary was swampy, which favored the growth of wild rice. The name of the indigenous people living there, Menominee, means as much as " wild rice eater ".

In 1790, the Canadian Louis Chappieau opened a fur trading company in today's Menominee County. In 1832, the first sawmill was built and the timber industry flourished. By 1890, the area developed into the No. 2 leading lumberjack regions of the country. After 1917, agriculture began to replace the wood industry. This is also the first agricultural college in Michigan Menominee County was founded.

1896 were parts of Menominee County of the newly founded Dickinson County allocated.

Economy

Today Menominee County is a leader in the dairy industry and in the manufacture of cheese. The residing industrial companies specialize in wood and metal processing, paper and furniture manufacturing. In addition, the long coastline, fishing and winter sports facilities attract many tourists.
