Berrien County (Michigan)

Berrien County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) St. Joseph.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest corner of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on the south by Indiana, on the west by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 4096 square kilometers, of which 2617 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Van Buren County and Cass County.

History

Berrien County was formed in 1829 as an original county of free territory. It was named after John M. Berrien, a U.S. Attorney General. The county is one of the so-called Cabinet counties since it was like some other named after a member of the cabinet of U.S. President Andrew Jackson.
