Isabella County, Michigan

Isabella County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mount Pleasant.

Geography

The County is located almost in the center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1496 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Midland County, Gratiot County, Montcalm County, Mecosta County and Clare County.

History

Isabella County was formed in 1831 from parts of Mackinac County and free territory. It was named after Isabella I, Queen of Castile, the patron of Christopher Columbus.

According to an official estimate in 2006, there were 65 818 people in 22 425 households, and 13,006 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 91.51 percent White, 1.93 percent African American, 2.75 percent Native American, 1.40 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.68 percent from other races groups; 1.68 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 22 425 households out of which 28.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers and 42.0 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent of all households and 7.3 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.

20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 29.4 percent between 18 and 24 years 23.8 percent between 25 and 44, 17.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 9.0 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 34,262, and the median income for a family $ 45,953. Males have a median income of $ 32,270, women $ 24,180. The per capita income was $ 16,242. 7.4 percent of families and 20.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
