Baraga County, Michigan

Baraga County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat), L' Anse.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is bordered to the north by Lake Superior ( Lake Superior), one of the five Great Lakes. It has an area of ​​2768 square kilometers, of which 427 square kilometers are water surface. The Baraga County bordered clockwise to the following counties: Marquette County, Iron County and Houghton County.

History

Baraga County was formed in 1875 from parts of Houghton County. It was named after Frederic Baraga, a European missionary and bishop, who was born in what is now Slovenia Trebnje and in this area the Native Americans taught Christianity.
