Jonathan Trumbull, Jr.

Jonathan Trumbull Jr. ( born March 26, 1740 in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut; † August 7, 1809 ibid ) was the second speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, Senator and Governor of Connecticut.

Early years

Jonathan Trumbull was born in Lebanon as the second of six children of his parents Jonathan Trumbull Sr. and Faith Robinson. His brother John Trumbull was a noted painter at the time of the Revolutionary War. He made in 1759 at Harvard its conclusion. In the years 1774/75, 1779/80 and 1788 he sat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut, whose spokesman he was in 1788.

Policy

Trumbull was elected to the first, second and third Congress and represented on 4 March 1789 to March 4, 1795 to the House of Representatives the state of Connecticut. In the second congress, he was from 1791 to 1793, the speaker, his predecessor and successor both times was Frederick Muhlenberg. He did not seek a fourth term in office, but instead got himself elected to the Senate, where he served from March 4, 1795 until June 10, 1796. He resigned to become Lieutenant Governor of the State of Connecticut. As the incumbent Governor Oliver Wolcott died in December 1797 Trumbull took over his post he retained until his death in 1809.
